Today was supposed to mark a
new beginning. I moved from my college town home in Davis to Los Angeles for
one reason: to teach young, bright (even though they attend a notoriously lax
school district) students and inspire them with my teaching so that they become
model students. It sounds like a Robin Williams movie, yes, but I truly believe
that I can make them see their potential for greatness. Today, I went to class
for the first time, put an apple for myself on my desk as an example, and
waited for the students to walk into class. I greeted them enthusiastically and
though they looked bored, I just know they were secretly listening to my words
about the wonders of literature. They may have looked agitated, but it was
probably because they didn’t understand the significance of what I was saying.
It was off-putting though when a student plugged in his giant headphones and I
could hear a loud beating sound from his corner in the room. Whatever. It was a
success I’d say.
